The Scarlet Letter and Other Visual Essays

So this week I had to create a visual essay for Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. That required a fake, white rose; soft charcoal; thread scissors; and red ribbon. Also, as you can tell by the picture above, I got a bit distracted somewhere along the way and found it the perfect opportunity to take a picture to post. Don't judge.

Moving right along...

Let me tell you, charcoal is A LOT messier than I anticipated it to be. By the time I woke up the next morning, it still hadn't gone away. And it didn't go away until I had come home from school. Yeah, wearing a white coat today was not the brightest idea...

But charcoal is fun.  I had a wonderful time colouring the rose. It took forever, but at least it was fun. Right?

That's the rose pre-smudging the charcoal. It took about four hours just to get the charcoal onto the rose.

The final product wasn't actually completed for about another hour.

Oh, if you ever want to fray ribbon that you've made into a bow, I highly recommend that you don't use ribbon with wire. Unless, of course, you like being stabbed by little bits of wire each time you go to adjust the ribbon....that was a fun time. Also, continuing on with the ribbon, it's quite difficult to give the illusion that the ribbon is tattered and charred when all you have is charcoal and it's a mesh-like material. Also, quite a bit of fun. Not. But it turned out okay, so no complaints?

Enough of me rambling. I'm sure you all want to see the finished product.

Not the best photo as all I had at the time was my phone (I didn't have my DSLR or my other camera at the time), so I do apologize for that. Although, I do still quite like how it turned out with a slight filter.

And here's another photo. I'm sorry, but I just had to include it. My cat had jumped up on the table and started to mess with my flower and once she saw me she just turned and sat there. I thought it was a bit artistic, so I jumped at the opportunity to take a picture (Are you seeing a pattern with this project yet? Because I certainly am.).

Katniss is a cheeky little thing, that's for sure.

So that's all for this post, I apologize for it being a bit short, but there's not much going on in my life right now. I have made a new friend called Connor though. He gives the best advice. I actually met him at Nikki's bonfire party. He's a sweetheart, he really is. Oh, I suppose I could have written about that (Nikki's bonfire/birthday party that is, if you didn't happen to catch on)... Maybe I'll write a post looking back on it.

I'm really sorry, I have a rubbish memory and I get distracted easily.

Right, well I'm off now. I've got a fair bit of homework that I still have to do...oops...

xx Brittany
