High School and Best Friends

I clearly remember my first day of high school. It was terrifying. I knew a lot of the people that were going to go to the same school, but I hadn't seen them since the seventh grade. I remember that first morning was when I became friends with my best friend. She's still my best friend today - three years later.

I had just gotten off the bus and I saw a group of friends that I used to hang out with in middle school, so I went and said hey. Then a girl, who we'll call Jayne, came up and slipped in the mud near where we were standing. Quite literally, everyone in the little group started to laugh at her, well except me. I truly thought it was funny, but I felt awful for her. I would have died if that had happened to me. Next, I remember walking with Jayne into the bathroom and helping her wash up as best as possible. She was confused as to why I didn't laugh at her like the others and I can understand why. But soon after that we became the best of friends and still are today. We may have our ups and our downs, but every pair of friends does.

The next best friend that I made and am still very close with is a guy I met Sophomore year. I remember my friend Livvy, whom I met later Freshman year, introducing us that year as I had never had any classes with him but she felt that we'd get along great. She was right, like she usually is. But I remember going to study in the library one morning and she was in there along with a couple of other people. She motioned for me to go sit with them, so I did (and as you can imagine, I got no studying done whatsoever). That was when she introduced me to my absolute best friend, Ryan. We really only spoke in the mornings whilst we were in the library with Livvy, but then we exchanged numbers and began texting all the time. And I'm not going to lie, I had a major crush on him at the time (I ended up telling him this over the summer). We then talked all the time and it came to the point where he was the only person I could tell absolutely anything to. I can talk to him about the guys I like or even petty girl drama and he'll listen and give his advice; I've never had a guy friend that I've been that close to and it's really a great thing to have, I think.

And now here I am, Junior year. I've started the International Baccalaureate Programme. My first day, I was terrified of who was going to be in my classes because I didn't really associate with many of the other IB DP students much. But I walked into my first class and saw a girl I had had chemistry with, Nikki. I also spotted Ryan across the room. You honestly have no idea how relieved I was to see someone I knew so well. Nikki and I then became fantastic friends; we are quite literally like the same person. And Ryan and I are still best friends. We sit in French during second block on B days and just talk about the future and the present and sometimes we'll look back on past memories, but not too often.

In the end, it doesn't matter how many friends you have. It only matters that you have those one or two friends that can always brighten your day and help you through anything and everything. The friends that you can trust with your life and all your secrets, no matter how embarrassing or deep.

xx Brittany
